Monoliths
Creating Monoliths expanded my knowledge of rammed earth to large-scale
outdoor site works. Their triangular crystal-like forms were drawn from
both nature and architecture. As the viewer moves around the two pieces
the forms seemingly transform into new shapes. The plantings on the top
reference the plantings on the surrounding ground suggesting a rise up
from the earth below. The layers and embedded rocks allude to geologic
strata and the long history of the earth exposed.
Their situation, size, form and pattern of layering create a sense of
awe and mystery leaving the viewer puzzling over where they came from
or how they were created.
